8 Top Drinks for Christmas

Cooleraid • 02/12/2024

Christmas is a time for getting together, festive food, and of course drinks that warm the soul! From spiced spirits to mocktails, to cosy hot chocolate, there is something for everyone to enjoy during the yule-tide season. Here’s our list of top Christmas drinks, all perfect for creating a jolly atmosphere and getting into the festive spirit.

  • Mulled Wine

No Christmas celebration would be complete without a festive and fruity mulled wine! This spiced red wine is simmered with traditional ingredients including cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, orange zest, and a splash of brandy. It’s a drink that fills the air with a warm and inviting aroma, instantly putting you in holiday mode. Whether you serve it at a Christmas party, after a cold winter walk, or with dinner, mulled wine is a Christmas must-have.

If you prepare your mulled wine in a slow cooker, it can simmer for hours filling your space with spicy aromas creating a festive treat for the senses! You can adjust the sweetness by adding sugar or honey depending on your preference.

  • Classic Hot Chocolate (with a twist)

Hot Chocolate is always a firm favourite, but even more so at Christmastime. It’s a creamy and indulgent drink that everybody loves.

For a truly indulgent treat, squirt fresh or chocolate cream on top and add marshmallows, and stir using a candy cane. You can also drizzle on caramel sauce and as if that wasn’t enough calorie overload, add chocolate shavings or powder too.

The ‘twist’ should be for the over 18s only. Add a shot of Irish Cream liqueur (you know the brand) for a nightcap after a festive night out!

  • Eggnog

Eggnog is a classic Christmas drink which has been enjoyed for centuries. Its origins are unclear, but its connection with Christmas time is undeniable. This creamy drink is made from eggs, milk, cream and sugar, and typically a splash of alcohol like brandy, rum, or whiskey. Some of us enjoy eggnog served warm, but it’s just as enjoyable chilled.

For those who prefer a zero-alcohol drink, this can be made with a dash of vanilla extract instead of the chosen spirit, and the nutmeg or cinnamon will help take care of the festive flavour.

  • Gin Cocktails

A party isn’t a party without a cocktail or two! And with gin seeing a resurgence in popularity in recent years it’s the perfect base for any tipple.

Many distilleries release limited Christmas edition gins, flavoured with seasonal ingredients including orange, cinnamon and juniper berries.

A basic cocktail is a Gin fizz - a refreshing option made with gin (or sloe gin if you prefer), lemon juice and soda water, but you can add all kinds of juices, mixers, and flavours for a festive feel.

  • Mulled Cider

This is perfect if you enjoy a warm festive drink but don’t particularly like the wine option. It’s prepared in the same way as mulled wine, but with cider.

For an extra twist, add a splash of rum or brandy. It’ll give it a kick. If you prefer a non-alcoholic version, you could just use apple juice instead of cider.

  • Irish Coffee

A classic winter warmer! Irish coffee is for those who enjoy their coffee with a little more than milk and sugar. Strong black coffee is combined with Irish whiskey and sugar with cream floating on top. The richness of the coffee and the smoothness of the whiskey make this the perfect drink for those cold Christmas days, morning or evening!

As an accompaniment to a mince pie or some Christmas pudding, try adding flavoured syrup for a twist on a traditional recipe

  • Hot Toddy

A Hot Toddy is the perfect drink to warm up with! Often consumed as a cold remedy, it’ll warm you from the top of your head to the tips of your toes! The combination of whiskey, honey, lemon, cinnamon and cloves really packs a punch and is great for entertaining in winter or at a Christmas party.

  • Buck’s Fizz

Who doesn’t love to wake up on Christmas morning and have a Buck’s Fizz for Breakfast? A simple celebration drink, it couldn’t be easier to make. Just mix orange juice with champagne and enjoy!

This versatile crowd pleaser can be enjoyed any time of year, but it’s extra special at Christmas.

So that’s our Christmas list! Remember to drink responsibly and try and balance out every alcoholic drink with a glass of water in between. It will help to re-hydrate you and will minimise the effects of any hangover you may suffer.
